Disagree with the first response. The mental health system and drug corporations are not the same thing. They do business with each other, but they are distinct. The mental health system is currently fragmented. It relies too heavily on drugs, which was maybe what the first reply was trying to say. The reason it relies so heavily on drugs is that psychiatrists stand to make a lot more money by simply prescribing something rather than taking the time to help people help themselves. The mental health system does not educate its clinical therapists enough anymore. Seems like anybody can make it into and through a Master's of Social Work program and become a therapist regardless of whether they really have the skills. Therapy is underappreciated, which therefore means it's less covered by insurance policies than it should be, which means there isn't as much incentive to teach or learn how to REALLY be a good therapist, which leads the world to underappreciate it… and so the cycle goes…The mental health system does not do a good job at tying together the factors that could be underlying people's dysfunction. For example, the profession relies too heavily on the DSM-IV for guidance, and uses the medical approach at helping people, which just simply does not speak to people's struggles. People need exercise, exposure to nature, healthy diets, and training in so many aspects of life. Instead, the field of mental health looks at mental illness the way a PCP looks at an ear infection. It simplifies people's struggles and therefore offers way too narrow of a range of solutions or strategies TO HELP PEOPLE BE ABLE TO OVERCOME THEIR ILLNESSES ON THEIR OWN. People think we can heal through only drugs or self healing , not true it takes both. On that note we the people have the right to do something! Thank you again

- Chosen by Voters If you are a private counselor you will not get any worse case scenerios. It will be people with real problems trying to work them out with someone that listens and understands what they are going through. If you work at a mental hospital it will be totally different you may get people that are beyond help and are seriously sick. I see a counselor every week and love her, she is completely geniune and totally understanding. good luck and I think you should do it, since you already have insight into mental illness. 2 years ago 100% 1 Vote

- Chosen by Voters Diet and Sleep. You want both of these to be Regular and Healthy. If you can do that, everything else should fall into place. Next on the list would be exercise, both physical and mental. It doesnt have to be anything fancy, no need for health clubs. Just walking will do. Also stretching and holding for 60 seconds will be great. Try to stretch every muscle in your body. For the mind I may suggest, reading poetry, writing, doing puzzles, reading books (not just mindless pulp either).Im not sure if this is what you were looking for….(general hapiness, good relationships, clarity of thought, ability to use reason – mental health checks – age shouldnt matter)(be able to walk 5 miles without becoming exhausted, be able to run 1 mile non stop, be able to touch your toes without bending your knees, climb stairs with relative ease. etc)Regular visits to the doctor, also some people find they benifit from psychotherapy or some sort of talk therapy. 4 years ago 100% 2 Votes

- Chosen by Voters It sounds like he is suffering from anxiety alongside his depression, when i was 14 I was in touch with the mental health service for my anxiety and depression, but had no parental support so it's fantastic that you are going along with him. The teams I experienced were very good and supportive, they offered various options for my mental health care. I was provided with counselling once a week and put on medication. They also talked to the school so I could get my time off to attend the counselling sessions. They can also put you in touch with charities and organisations that can aid your son with his school work if he is unable to attend or offer him options at different schools that will meet his needs. It is a really positive thing that he is seeking help and although it is very scary the people are really lovely and not too pressuring. He doesn't need to say anything that he doesn't want to but anything he does talk about can help him with therapy. They will ask about family and school situations about how he feels when down or anxious. But not all at once, my first meeting was just about how i was feeling at the time and what I wanted help with. I have always been quite a silent person in therapy something which is harder in adulthood but was really more acceptable at a younger age, I could take my time and create a way of feeling comfortable to talk. I also found school very difficult, due to bullying and abuse and I was aided to make a change of schools at 16 through the mental health services. I also suffered from panic attacks from the age of 13, which made school very difficult but the counsellors explained to the teachers that I was going to have them and what to do when they occured, an intervention still in place in higher education. The more educational professionals can understand the better they are with you, when I first had a panic attack they were really bad at school but the counsellor really helped with this. If you need any info about what kind of things may be offered in terms of therapies interventions or medications then send me a message and I will try as best I can. I have been in mental health care since 14 and in hospital and a unit so I have personal experience, but I also have studied mental health so may be able to explain some therapy styles. Most importantly if his therapist isn't right for him then he can change and must find someone who fits. Hope it all goes ok and he gets the help he needs and deserves.Care with the panic attacks is different for all people who have them. I could never be crowded by people as this would make me more anxious. A technique I find helpful is when I feel an attack coming on to tense all my muscles and then release one by one. In terms of the breathing dont take deep breaths but long soft breaths holding your stomach just under the ribcage so it pushes against your hand when you breathe in. Try breathing with him as this can help to get into the rhytmm of good breathing. I also find afterwards I get terrible pins and needles in by extremities, I find pressing lightly on my wrist and circling my hands removes the pins and needles, and circling my feet. Also when a panic attack comes along putting cold water onto my wrists can help to reduce the sweaty palms and tingling. 3 years ago 50% 2 Votes

- Chosen by Voters actually, physical exercise is great for your mental health… when you exercise, your body releases endorphins (also known as the happy chemical) this helps relax both the body and the mind. additionally, certain physical exercises can pose a challenge for you which stimulates you mentally. and of course, exercise helps relieve stress because it can be very relaxing to just let your body run mechanically, like when you're running long distances. it's good to exercise because it can help you release thoughts that have been plaguing your mind when sitting at a desk all day 4 years ago 100% 1 Vote

LOL no weighing. Man I liked it. I went to a psychologist and it was very mentally satisfying talking to him. He helped my get my life back on track and get back into school and we just talked about life and my opinions on tons of topics. To start off they ask why you came to them, what you want to get out of their sessions, and so forth. Most of the time they just try to get you talking. The more you open up the easier it is for them to help you. Have fun with it! 4 years ago 1 person rated this as good I liked this answer the most.
